Justice Is Calling Reclaiming Honor Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Justin Sloan Michael Anderle Kate Rudd LMBPN Publishing Books
Justice is Calling is the first book in the Reclaiming Honor series by authors Justin Sloan and Michael Anderle. It’s the first book the two have collaborated on, and it’s set in Anderle’s ultra popular Kurtherian Gambit universe. I’ve read a few of Sloan’s other series before, but nothing from Anderle, though I’ve seen him raved about on Twitter. I knew he wrote about vampires, so I just wasn’t interested. In a post apocalyptic world, the vampire heroine Valerie escapes from her blood thirsty (pun intended) father and brother, flees Europe and crosses the Atlantic to America. Unlike, most vampires, she has a strong sense of honor and sets out to serve justice where ever it’s needed. New York hosts it’s own group of diabolical bad guys, so Valerie builds an army of were-creatures, vampires, and humans. Together, they free the city just in time for her brothers arrival and the inevitable fight to come.
“What, I’d be the Queen of the Damned? I don’t think so.”
To tell the truth, I burned out on vampires, and the like, a long time ago. In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, I read the Anne Rice books. I enjoyed them at the time, but by the fifth one I was done. I got bored with them, and after a while the whole idea of vampires seemed pretty ridiculous. Apparently, not many other people felt that way. Over the past 30 years, vampires have become extremely popular, and they’ve brought along were-wolves for the ride. However, regardless of how sparkly the vampire and how ripped the were-wolf’s abs were, I was still not interested.
Being a big fan of Sloan’s Falls of Redemption series and knowing that Anderle must being doing something right because all of his 15 or 16 TKG (The Kurtherian Gambit) books have hundreds of reviews each and nothing less than four and half stars on Amazon, I thought I would give Justice is Calling a shot. So really, it’s because I loved reading about the Mawtu that I decided to pick up a vampire book again.
So, if I don’t like reading about vampires and were-wolves, then what did I like about the book? That’s a good question, and the answer is that I liked reading about the vampires and the were-wolves, and the were-bears, pumas, whatever. Anderle came up with a good sci-fi origin story for them, but I don’t want to spoil it here, and I can’t remember if it was explained in this book or if I heard it on a podcast.
"That's not sticking. You want to give me a nickname, go with something like King of Death or Mighty One."
There was a good balance of plot and character development with just the right about of action. Sloan and Anderle harmed a lot of bad guys in the making of this story, and I never felt it dragged on or got slow. However, it seemed balanced with both character development and world building. By the end of the story, they leave you with four to five characters that you really want to read more about. Also, in addition to tidbits of TKG lore that were planted throughout the book, the authors also set the groundwork for this new setting.
The story takes place about 150 years after Anderle’s solo books. There are plenty of references to things that happened in those earlier books, but I don’t feel not having read them hurt my enjoyment in any way. The story is pretty solid and stands well on it’s own.
I’m a fan of post apocalyptic fiction and have read everything from zombie invasions to true prepper fiction. Justice is Calling is different because it’s set so much farther into the future. Well, it’s also got the vampires and were-wolf things, but is that any different from having zombies? When the story first starts in France, it seems very post nuclear war, but when Valerie gets to America, it takes on a Blade Runner vibe that I really liked.
“Rather, I believe, that justice is calling for this fight to occur. Who am I to take justice away from those who need it?”
I rate Justice is Calling five out of five stars. It’s hugely entertaining, funny at times, full of violent action without being overly graphic, and a lot of fun. However, I’ve reached a point where I’m invested in more series than I can keep up with, and now, in addition to the next two Reclaiming Honor books, I also want to go back and start reading Anderle’s original TKG books. I know, it’s a terrible problem to have, but at least there are only 15 or 16 of them.

Justice Is Calling Reclaiming Honor Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Justin Sloan Michael Anderle Kate Rudd LMBPN Publishing Books Reviews
I got hooked on the Kurtherian Gambit novels with their cursing "superhero". Aliens, vampires, werewolves, what's not to like? Now Justin has taken the world concept back to the beginning. We get to see the development of a new lead character. Can't wait to see where he goes with her. A really fun read with lots of potential. I'll certainly be reading on to see where this goes!
This is one of the best books I have read!! The characters are impressive, the plot is exciting and the writing is superb! Valerie has guts, morals, integrity and fights like she's possessed! Awesome combination! She's willing to go against those she loves to stand up for what's right. The action in this book is very intense, so be prepared for some bloody scenes. They rock! This book pulls you in and doesn't let go. I laughed and cried right along with Valerie, Sandra, Diego and Cammie. I can't wait for the sequel! If you like vampires and were-animals, this is a definite must read!! It has it all... action, comedy, romance and drama. You won't be disappointed!
This review is for both the audio and ebook as I have both and switched back and forth during reading/listening. Holy crap, Batman! I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. I love action packed stories and New that Justin always delivers on that. I haven't read any of Michael's work but love the part of his world he has shared in this. These two authors go together like a Reece's peanut butter cup. It's like they were meant to write together! I loved it. I normally read Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance. This has a touch of both. For some reason, men authors always seem to tease with the romance. And just when things are getting really good, they switch gears. Of course, it wouldn't really be appropriate for the world surrounding the characters. All I know is, if they ever decided to write a paranormal romance book with Royland and Cammie, I know all the readers in the various FB groups I'm in would go wild! It would be a number one seller. Royland was my favorite character. Followed up by one that appears at the very end. I can't name him or I will spoil it. Our heroine, Valerie is really tough but in some ways, Sandra was my favorite. She runs a close second in being the heroine. I loved Cammie also. Sergeant Wallace is another wonderful guy, I'm partial to cops since my hubby was one for so many years. It was nice to see how Wallace chose to follow the honorable route and not go with the crowd. After all, cops are so underpaid. So we know he was truly working for the good of the people. But he is just a small side character. All the characters and world was so well developed and rich that I feel I know them all. This is a dystopian like world with airships that make me think of steampunk. I went into this thinking vampires and weres, oh my! As in my normal Supernaturals. Boy did I get a nice surprise! If I would've known before hand that this is in a different category, I'm not sure it would appeal to me. Only because I've never tried this genre or whatever you would call it. But I am so glad I read it and hope anyone reading this review will try it, no matter what you normally read. You will love "ass-cat" Diego. Lol. It was fun to see the girls tease him with their name calling. There were lots of lol moments. I hated Donovan. I will say that at the end, you get to see justice served. The title is fitting. And oh how I hope and pray the authors write a smutty book with some of these characters, especially our last guest that showed up at the end. Sorry for rambling, words can't do justice to how good this book was and I don't want to give away any spoilers. The narration was awesome. This is one of the best narrators I've ever listened to. And she can do so many different voices. I was blown away.
I'm a big fan of the Kurtherian Gambit series, read them all, and I love the fact it's branching out. This story was true to the spirit of the original and great as a standalone story.
We get a new heroine and a new story arc. Valerie is a vampire made that discovers her origins might not be as noble as she thought. Now she's out to set things right and see justice done. And if she gets to put a little crimp in her brother's plans that's even better. Unfortunately the world has gone down hard, elements of civilization remain but it's a dark future. A future where even a vampire might not be the worst thing out there.
